Face the Freak

Along with those spiffy costumes below, I've tacked down my TOP FOUR  outlandish makeup and hair selections for All Hallows Eve, compliments of Style.com, of course! Check out those paint-stained lips, razor sharp cheekbones, and dewy eyes.

The Infamous Lady Gaga

Practically a brand of eccentric extreme all her own, going "Gaga" requires you to pretty much freestyle your
e n t i r e  outfit with as much randomness as possible. As long as it is over the top. Here, Gaga's doing the neon metallic thing with bright pink lids and lips with a pewter lighting bolt cutting across the face. This look is achieved with some good ol' Scotch tape and a black paint stick. Style.com recommends MAC's Greasepaint Stick in Slick Black.
A V A T A R

Forget about going green. Blue is the hue for Halloween, and if you have any desire to be a freakily tall alien, Avatar is your costume of choice. To get the look simply mix some blue eyeshadow into your foundation and apply evenly, hopefully achieving a light blue tint. Afterwards, add navy blue streaks along the edges of the face to complete the look. Yellow contacts, anyone?

The Queen of Hearts

Doesn't she just make you feel warm inside? I applaud your Halloween spirit if you're going this all-out, first of all. Secondly, you're in for some serious brushing up of the makeup skills. To obtain her royal skin tone, track down some white foundation. Then, grab some Elmer's glue, and apply to eyebrows
(that's right, apply it to your eyebrows!). No worries, it comes out with a bit of soap 'n water. Trace a black line on top of the eyebrow, and fill in a nice light blue shadow from lid to brow. Last touch? Those daintily hearted lips. Ooh lala!

Dr. Frank-n-Furter

If this doesn't make for a frightful Halloween costume I don't know what will! Dr. Frank-n-Furter of
Rocky Horror Picture Show is certainly a classic. Although.. I'm ashamed to admit I've still never seen the movie all the way through. I aim to falsify that statement this Halloween Season, though I'm certainly running short of time. To get the face of a Frank-n-Furter, darken your eyebrows and get a solid wall of black or gray stretching from lid to brow, going heavy on the mascara and eye liner. With a business card serving as template held against the cheekbones, apply a peach colored blush to the cheeks. And don't forget the cherry red lips, darling!

Happy Haunting.

Campus Cool

Since this year I'm writing a regular fashion column for the school paper, The Macohi, I thought I would go ahead and upload my articles when I finish them.

They're only slightly lengthy, so grab a soda and some popcorn, and I'll provide the entertainment! Happy Reading!

Campus Cool
The ringing in of another new school year has announced the return of the back-to-school style season. This time around, however, the classic chic is back. Finally, the day has arrived for those distressed bleached jeans and paint splattered rocker tees to crawl back to the decade from which they escaped.

The Keds Call of Duty Shoe. Perfectly 1940s, and perfectly adorable.

Ushering out the eighties is a look of classic elegance embellished with feminine elements reinterpreted from the 1940s.

On campus, garments that complement the figure enveloping the 1940s style, such as high waisted skirts, modestly cut scoop neck blouses, and cinched-waist dresses have soared in popularity, and all have been sighted throughout the halls of the Manatee High School.

“I’m happy the classic chic style’s finally back,” said senior Carolyn Chupa, decked out in an cinched waist sundress from Anthropologie. “It’s such an easy look to emulate, and on top of that, it just looks so much cleaner and well put together.”

Needless to say, the ‘tailored fit’ look has rocketed right up to the top of the Campus Fashion totem pole, alongside a myriad of variations on this classic chic. A prime example of the ‘vintage feminine’ style given a modern edge is the snug cropped sleeve sweater trend, which is a lovely addition to any sundress or blouse.

Looking lovely in a preppy cardigan.

“And they’re super comfortable, too!” Said senior Leland Van Alstyne, snuggling up to her classic black Lacoste cardigan. This look in particular has been making quite the comeback during these first weeks of school, thanks to the new dress code’s ‘must have sleeves’ policy.

A touch of rebelliousness, though, still stirs within the student trendsetters, evident in this season’s prime choice of footwear. Embellished sandals are what’s hot now, and these casual Floridian shoes-of-choice look great paired with anything from flowing white sundresses to stiff dark-wash blue jeans.

“These are my favorites,” said junior Mary-Elizabeth Woodward, pointing out her jewel-studded J. Crew gladiator sandals. “They match with everything, which makes them perfect for a day at school or a dinner out with the girls.”

The versatility lies in the variety of styles the sandals come in, from the jewel-toned beading in floral patterns to hard core metal studs.

The overall look of a vintage garment paired with a classy sweater and sandals is a refreshing one, welcome after years stuck in a rocker-fad time warp. The chic doesn’t appear to be departing anytime soon either, but is instead expected to ride its wave of popularity through the winter fashion season and on into spring. So stock up on those clean-cut clothes and studded sandals, because the classic cool is back in  school.

Costume Chic

First off, I apologize for my rather long hiatus, those college apps will get you as a senior! Since I finished my UF application, I'm rewarding myself (and hopefully all of you, as well) with a fun little post kicking off the month of October.

Seeing as everyone is already discussing what in the world they should be for Halloween, I thought I would brainstorm some fashionable and entertaining ideas for you, and yes, you're of course very welcome. Here's to hoping I don't have to see another scantily clad nurse or cop costume (it's not a good look). Let's try to get a little more creative.

(Hear, hear!)

Anne Hathaway rocking the Cleopatra look.
Those eyes are fierce!

Katie Couric
as Donald Trump. Cute.

Heidi Klum as the Hindu Goddess Kali. It's creative and frightening.

Audrina Patridge the peacock. Aww...

Michelle Trachtenburg and Lydia Hearst flaunt their Snow White and evil pixie (?) ensembles.

Audrina Patridge in another winner, Madonna. This is really good, I'm not gonna lie.

Blake Lively the adorable flight attendant. I would like some pretzels, please.

So, that's all I can find for now, unless you really really want to be a cop. Which you don't, right? Right. Anywho, more to come fairly soon, minus that awfully long hiatus.
